Theories are an organized set of principles used to explain observed phenomena. Usually evaluated in terms of three criteria. Step 3- begin shaping the idea into a hypothesis. Basic research- designed to test a specific hypothesis from a specific theory. Goal is to increase understanding of human behavior. Applied research- designed to find a solution to social problems. Goal is to enlarge our understanding of naturally occurring events.
