We are most attracted to people whose traits are different from our own. We are attracted to people similar to ourselves. Developing ideas: start asking questions, does watching violent tv cause kids to be more aggressive, search the literature, begin shaping the idea into a hypothesis, a testable prediction about the conditions under which an event will occur. An organized set of principles used to explain observed phenomena. Usually evaluated in terms of 3 criteria. Basic research: designed to test a specific hypothesis from a specific theory. Goal is to increase understanding of human behavior. Applied research: designed to find a solution to social problems. Goal is to enlarge our understanding of naturally occurring events. Operational definition: the way you measure or manipulate conceptual variable. Attraction = self-report rating of desire for another person. Social anxiety = physiological arousal during a social situation. Translating the abstract conceptual variable into measurable constructs.
