Document Summary
Introspection- asking someone to think inward & then describe (how do we know what"s in someone"s mind?) E. b. titchener- structuralism- the analysis of mental structures (what is the mind?) William james- functionalism- the study of how the mind works (what is the mind for? why do we have a mind?) Consider the following examples of popular wisdom: Opposites attract vs people with similar interests are attracted to each other. Blowing off steam makes you feel better. Popular wisdom often contradicts itself (we need research to really know) Hindsight bias- once you know the outcome it seems obvious ( i could have predicted that ) Tests ideas with the use of data- evidence (empiricism) Hypothesis must be testable (for example you can"t scientifically test if there is an afterlife) Design the study to test the hypothesis. Operational definition- statement about the procedures the researcher used to measure a variable (how are you going to answer the question?)
