Innate: babies have a preference to sweet tastes. Learned: pregnant mother drinks carrot juice during the last trimester before the baby is born. Baby has a preference to carrot-flavor cereal. Calms baby down (i. e. sugar water can calm baby down) Breastfed babies particularly are sensitive to mothers" body odors. This sensitivity starts at the age of 1 week old babies, where the baby will move its head to the direction where the smell of a mother is coming from. Only has this sensitivity for mothers" body odors, not fathers. Can hear up to the distance of human voices. Babies prefer the voice of their mother. There is remaining embryonic fluid in the auditory canal that needs to be flushed out before hearing is complete. Nothing to see in the fetal stage.
