Symbols used can from language symbols and are the same ones found in french such as accent marks. Clefs and voice range formatting in score. Modern notation comes from the model guido created in the eleventh century. Fifth line of the modern staff was added around the middle ages. Higher staff is used from sopranos and altos and lower staff is used for tenor and bass. Doesn"t make sense if voice and instrument range are confined to one staff in the grand staff. Clef can be used to express the range of the staff. Treble clef - part of the upper staff that identifies the notes of the lines and spaces as belonging to the soprano range. Alto clef - encompasses the bass staff and the treble staff.
