Document Summary
Core case study: biosphere 2- a lesson in humility. Designed to mimic the earth"s natural systems. Had to pump in oxygen from the outside. Rates of respiration were faster than oxygen could be produced. Loss of biodiversity: most insects went extinct. Tried to grow crops, but couldn"t due to high co2 levels. Trying to recreate the system was complicated because it happens naturally in the real world. Culture=knowledge, beliefs, values, and learned ways of life shared by a group of people. Worldview=person"s or group"s beliefs about meaning, purpose, operation, and essence of the world. Both affect perception of environment and environmental problems. Ethics=what we think is right and wrong. How people think the world works and what they think their role should be. Beliefs about right and wrong with regard to environment. We are apart from the rest of nature and can manage nature to meet our increasing needs and wants.
