Process of breaking down complex organic molecules into smaller molecules that can be taken into cells. Mechanical = breaks food into smaller pieces increase surface area available for enzymes. Chemical = enzymes break bonds through addition of water hydrolysis splits food into smaller molecules. Are used as energy source (make atp) Up small molecules enter the body through the blood. Undigested material passes out of digestive system.
