Document Summary
Fungi are a huge and important component of the biosphere. About 100,000 species have been described, there may be as many as 1. 5 million species of fungi. Some fungi- exclusively single-celled, most have complex multicellular bodies. These orgs are found in about every terrestrial and aquatic habitat. We will learn about the structure and evolutionary history of fungi, survey the major groups of fungi, and discuss their ecological and commercial significance. 31. 1: fungi are heterotrophs that feed by absorption. Vast diversity- but all fungi share some key traits: 1. the way they get nutrition, 2. many of them grow by forming multicellular filaments, a body structure that plays an important role in how they obtain food. They cannot make their own food as plants and algae can. But unlike animals, fungi do not ingest (eat) their food. Instea, fungi absorb nutrients from the environment outside of its body. Many fungo do this by secreting hydrolytic enzymes into their surroundings.
