Mendel and the gene idea - chapter 14. 1 and 14. 2. For centuries, we knew characteristics passed from parent to offspring. Darwin didn"t know anything about genes and chromosomes. Mechanisms of inheritance not well understood until this century with gregor mendel. Mendel used the scientific approach to identify two laws of inheritance. First to discover basic rules of inheritance in eukaryotes. Published findings in 1865, but important of work not realized at the time. Mendel"s work has become the foundation of the science of genetics. He discovered the basic principles of heredity by breeding garden peas. Remove anthers before mature pollen produced -> proven self-fertilization transfer pollen from different flower to carpel. Pollen grains from stamens -> land on carpel of same flower. Character: a heritable feature that varies among individuals. Mendel selected 7 unequal pairs of characters (unequal varieties of peas) He quantified his findings (not merely described) used experimental approach. First to apply quantitative methods to study of inheritance.
