The term biology means the study of life . Basic unit of life, can be unicellular or multicellular. Required for organisms to maintain organization, grow, and reproduce. Includes minerals, water, & other chemical building blocks found in air, water, soil, and other living things. Organisms use energy continuously- cells are constantly working. Nutrients and energy are recycled in an ecosystem. Living things use energy on a continuous basis. Homeostasis- the ability of an organism to maintain its internal environment (physiological and behavioral) Ex: drinking water to cool down after exercising (physiological); moving into shade (behavioral) Sensory organs detect and respond to external stimuli (light, sound, chemicals, etc. ) Internal stimuli are perceived by stretch, temperature, pain, and chemical receptors (stretching of stomach after eating) Plants, birds, and mammals grow by producing more cells to increase their mass (multicellular) Bacteria grow by enlarging their cells (unicellular) Growth involves the conversion of acquired materials to molecules in an organism"s body.
