The pen is mightier than the keyboard
The present research suggests that even when laptops are used solely
to take notes, they may still be impairing learning because their use
results in shallower processing. We show that whereas taking more
notes can be beneficial, laptop note takers’ tendency to transcribe
lectures verbatim rather than processing information and reframing it
in their own words is detrimental to learning.
It seems quality > quantity when it comes to notes. People writing by
hand not only wrote fewer words, but they wrote less verbatim
material. So rather than merely recording what was going on in the
talk, they were ingesting it before describing it in their own words.

We show that whereas taking more notes can be beneficial, laptop note takers" tendency to transcribe lectures verbatim rather than processing information and reframing it in their own words is detrimental to learning. It seems quality > quantity when it comes to notes. People writing by hand not only wrote fewer words, but they wrote less verbatim material. So rather than merely recording what was going on in the talk, they were ingesting it before describing it in their own words. http://journals. sagepub. com/doi/abs/10. 1177/0956797614524581.
