NROSCI 0081 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Subthalamic Nucleus, Substantia Nigra, Prefrontal Cortex
Document Summary
Relays sensory info from muscles and skin back to the cns: efferent nerves: carry motor commands from brain to body. Signals from cns to muscle for voluntary movement and reflexes: grey matter: made of somas of neurons; white matter: made of myelinated axons. Autonomic nervous system involuntary nervous system: heart rate, blood pressure, etc, sends and receives messages; regulates auto behaviors. Sympathetic prepares organs for activity; fight or flight; norepinephrine is the nt that activates it. Parasympathetic readies body for restoration of energy/rest; digestion; acetylcholine is the nt that activates it. Located in spine; transfers info between cns and pns. Spinal nerves are attached to cord at 31 diff levels. Sensory info enters the dorsal (back) of spine. Motor commands exit on central (stomach) side of spine. Same dave sensory afferent motor efferent; dorsal afferent ventral efferent. Short neurons within spinal cord are called interneurons; make up gray matter and relay info to other neurons in the spinal cord: brain.
