Treatment for anxiety anxiety is linked to an increase in brain activity so treatments decrease brain activity: cns depressants. Pharmacodynamics: length of drug effect varies on drug by drug basis, can last minutes to days. If gaba binds, chloride ions enter, neurons are less likely to fire an ap. In absence of gaba and presence of barbiturates, it will also open, chloride ions enter, there is hyperpolarization. If gaba and barbiturates are present, hyperpolarization is even greater. Can activate gaba receptors by themselves, but both creates an even greater effect. Benzodiazepines: e(cid:374)d i(cid:374) (cid:858)pa(cid:373)(cid:859) o(cid:396) (cid:858)la(cid:373)(cid:859, can be calming and sedating, but not to the point where they knock you out, has an effect on gaba and increases effect of it too. Nothing happens when they bind benzo cause cns depression only when gaba also binds to the same receptors and then there is an increase. Require that gaba is also present that(cid:859)s (cid:449)hy they a(cid:396)e safe(cid:396) too.
