During the late 1800s and early 1900s minstrel shows played a huge roll on introducing certain aspects of african-american music to the american population. Originated on the plantation: recognized on stage and became a world-wide art. Plantation owners were accustomed to and expected to see these shows: thought to be a way to lessen their guilt. Not born in america born in europe. The minstrel show was a unique phenomenon in the united states. Performed in tents: had shows in lots of small towns. By the 1830s became stage performance for white performers. Minstrel shows were for the most part male and all white: until after the civil war when african-americans began to appear.
