MUSIC 0711 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Camp Meeting, Religion In Africa, Aretha Franklin
Document Summary
One of the periods in jazz, most often associated with the origins of african-american religious music in the united states, is the great awakening period. Evidence that there would be a great awakening emerged as early as the beginning of the 1800s along the eastern seacoast: mainly massachusetts, kentucky, and virginia. But it was on the plantations, mainly in the south, where african-americans made their first and most significant contributions to religious music. It was the southern plantation preacher who was responsible for the fiery, bluesy delivery so commonly associated with both blues and religious music. The song sermon gave birth to the new popular, traditional gospel style. Dorsey"s experience as a blues artist led him to introduce those african-americanism that helped make him the king of gospel : the original gospel style did not start with dorsey; it originated on the plantation during slavery.
