Sociology: the scientific study of interactions and relations among human beings. Values: cultural ideas about what is good and desirable, as opposed to bad and undesirable, values can conflict. Development: physical, mental and psychological change from birth to death, biological, psychological, and social. Without socialization: development is slowed, may not occur at all, crucial window ages 0-2. Socialization is not a natural process: socialization can only occur in contact with other humans. Values: shared ideas about what is good and just. Norms: socially accepted rules of behavior: norms are relative, the rules we follow are based on the situation. Deviance: behavior that violates norms: is not always bad, breach is violating a norm, when people deviate, not just violating a norm, also not holding to a value, deviance is relative, violating the rules depends on the situation. Deviance is relative : norms, vary (change) across cultures and societies, vary across subcultures, vary over time.
