We can control some events of our life (about 50%) Some stressors are a part of our life. Without some stressors, we do not grow. Allostasis: internal balancing process to meet challenges effectively. Allostatic load: too much stress to cope well become overwhelmed. Coping cognitive response to approach to meeting challenges before becoming stressors: both reactive and proactive. Quickly helpful in beginning to reduce strain (tension and anxiety) and provide time to select coping mechanisms. Unlearned biological reactions: crying: can begin to relieve allostatic load, humor and laughter: often spontaneous; changes mood to relieve stress, sleep and dreams: can provide temporary stress relief. Marshmallow test: talking about problems (venting): very common; helps reduce tension by sharing and analyzing. Fear: useful for defending against threat: parents teach fears to children. Anxiety: can be a motivator to do things: some anxiety has a genetic component.
