Document Summary

Psych 243 chapter 5 stressors, sources, and reactions. Challenges: demands that people meet, hoping to cope with them successfully by using their personal resources: potential causes of stress if we cannot cope with them, but become actual stressors if we cannot control their effects. Stress: uncomfortable moments of anxiousness caused by time, frustration, loss, loneliness, conflicting demands that could push us into feelings of anger, helplessness, or depression. Chronic stress effects shorten a person"s lifespan in proportion to its amount and the length of time affecting the person. Sources of stress change as life changes (age, physical environment, personal) Sandwich generation: stuck between taking care of growing children and aging parents. Capituation: early dreams vanishing, goals not being reached, keeping job is essential, hope for salary raised. Two important points: challenges and demands that we face in our lifetime are unavoidable and not all of them result in negative effects on us.
