Aggressive = cope by fighting: moving against , over-identifying with ideal self and strive for power and control. Withdrawn = cope by disengaging: moving away , want to overcome despised self but have no hope of achieving ideal. Psychologically healthy individuals use a mix although individual may have primary style. Neurotic trend = individuals dominated by single strategy. Real self = inner core of personality that we perceive. Ideal self = what one sees as perfection and hopes to become: shaped by overcoming our inadequacies, this isn"t the psychologically healthy goal. The ideal self should come more in line with the real self and the real self should be the goal: tyranny of the should i should"ve studied more; i should"ve worked harder, etc. The ideal you set can sometimes be too difficult to obtain. Neurotic trends toward people: feelings of helplessness.
