“When doing academic research, scholars must critically evaluate the provenance of the ideas,
concepts and scientific data they use.” (i.e. is the material of “academic quality”?)
Upcoming Events:
First draft Researched Argumentative Problem/Solution Essay due Sunday at 11:00pm
on Canvas. See the 103117 Notes from Class.
Many of you have received feedback on your “Interview a Professor” course
requirement. I will be contacting everyone else in the coming days. If it was submitted
on time and with good effort, full credit was received.
This evening I will be returning your Annotated Bibliographies with a few comments
and scores.
Students will be required to meet with me one-on-one to discuss their 1st draft
Researched Argumentative Problem/Solution Essays; this will count as the “second
Boben office visit” (see the syllabus). These meetings will be scheduled via a Canvas
calendar sign-up for various times, beginning on Thursday November 16 and then
continuing over the two weeks after Thanksgiving. Scheduling will be on a first-come,
first-served basis. Details will be announced in the coming days.
KEY POINT!
For the Researched Argumentative Problem/Solution Argumentative Essay, our
Thesis Statement ought to be in the first couple of paragraphs. It should be
about three to six sentences, stating the essence of the problem,
mentioning the existence of multiple perspectives and plausible
solutions and then pointing toward one, best solution (or
combination of solutions).
The essay should follow along with what the Thesis Statement says; the Thesis
Statement and the body of the essay ought to be informed by each other. (They are both
evolving compositions.)
See chapter 3 again… except our Thesis Statement needs to be longer because, with our
research, we are dealing with heavier substance and greater complexity.
Remember to highlight the Thesis Statement!
