Perpetual construction site (constantly being broken down and rebuilt) The amount of bones a human has depends on how old they are. These fuse together to form larger bones throughout development. Long bones femur and humerus (longer than they are wide, found in limbs) Sesamoid bones patella (small bones embedded in tendon) the patella is embedding in the quadriceps tendon. Wormian bones extra, irregularly shaped pieces that form within a suture in the skull (not everyone has these) It consists of specialized cells surrounded by matrix. Metaphysis= growth plate region (in between diaphysis and epiphysis) Articular cartilage: cover joint to reduce friction and absorb shock. Endosteum: inside lining of medullary cavity, contains osteogenic (bone forming) cells, very thin. Periosteum: though membrane covering bone but not the cartilage. Outer fibrous layer= dense, irregular connective tissue, nerves. Osteogenic layer= bone cells and blood vessels that nourish or help with repairs. Collagen + mineral salt crystals = flexibility and hardness.
