Document Summary

Biol 110 - lecture 15 - protists with modified mitochondria, kingdoms euglenozoa an. Two groups of protists have highly modified mitochondria: diplomonads and parabasalids. Suggests each group is monophyletic, but it is unclear how closely related the groups are to each other. Have modified mitochondria called mitosomes that lack functional electron transport chains. Can"t perform cellular respiration so energy is derived from pathways such as glycolysis. Found in anaerobic environments and are often parasites. Ex: giardia is an intestinal parasite responsible for the diseases giardiasis. Also called beaver fever , and is generally transmitted by drinking contaminated water. Some species contain hydrogenosomes that may be a degenerate mitochondrion. The most well known parabasalids are from its genus trichomonas. Ex: t. vaginalis is a sexually transmitted parasite that infects millions of people a year. Very important parabasalids are endosymbionts of insects that live in the guts of animals. Endosymbiotic bacteria plays a role in the digestion of cellulose.
