Document Summary

Many are just 0. 5-2 micrometers in diameter. Kingdom protista is polyphyletic: some are more closely related to plants, animals, or fungi than to other protists. So it is not really a kingdom anymore. Organisms in most eukaryotic lineages are protists. Heterotrophs that absorb organic molecules or large food particles. These have all arisen independently in many protist lineage: sexual and asexual. Endosymbiosis in eukaryotic evolution: endosymbiosis- process in which certain unicellular organisms engulf other cells which become endosymbionts and then organelles in the host cell, like engulfing an aerobic prokaryote - become mitochondria, photosynthetic cyanobacterium turned into plastids. Gave rise to red and green algae. Dna of plastid genes closely resembles dna of cyanobacteria. They were ingested in the food vacuoles of heterotrophic eukaryotes and became endosymbionts themselves. Concept 28. 3: excavates include protists with modified mitochondria and protists with unique flagella.
