Overview of cell communication: signaling molecule. On plasma membrane or in the cytoplasm: signal transduction. Relay or ampli ed signals: response output. Evidence of cell communication: streptococcus pneumoniae causes pneumonia and meningitis. Bad (virulent) bacteria want to be as bad as possible. Wednesday, october 5, 2016: to do this, bacteria become more virulent, resistant against antibiotics, camou age themselves from the host"s immune system, etc. Bacteria want to uptake genes as bene cial as possible for them: this is good for them but bad for us. The more bacteria around the more variety of bene cial genes are around: this is a golden opportunity for bacteria to transform. Big question: how do other cells know how many cells are around them: quorum sensing: density checking mechanism. Some bacteria wait to attack until they are high in number. Basics in cell communication: signaling cell. Releases the signaling molecule: responding cell. Four types of cell communication: endocrine signaling.
