COMM 1100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Human Nature, Ethical Egoism, Social Penetration Theory
Document Summary
Interpersonal communication is between people more directly; not mediated. Occurs between two (a dyad) or more individuals. Mediated communication tends to be the dominant form people think about, but interpersonal communication helps us answer questions about how we relate with others. Next few days we"ll focus on relationship development. Not every one of the relationships you have is the same. Relationships types: familial relationships, friendships, romantic relationships, rivalries. Relationship markers: length of relationship, intensity of relationship. Our interest here is (i) how do we form relationships, (ii) can the info give us clues about longevity of relationships, and (iii) how does this improve our knowledge of communication. These are sometimes things we consciously consider, but much of this reasoning is subconscious. Uses an onion as a metaphor: layers of personality. Deeply held fears/dreams: shared with a few.
