COMM 1100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Computer-Mediated Communication, Social Presence Theory, Media Richness Theory
Document Summary
One aspect of communication science we don"t cover in much detail is computer- mediated communication (cmc) Emerged as a domain through the late 90s. Looking at comm between people using networked telecommunications systems: ex: email, social network sites, instant messaging, is this different from mass mediated comm, somewhat: focus on reciprocal comm. At the time technology was being described as the new frontier because of its speed, novelty, and utility. But comm scholars originally thought cmc was dumb. Interpersonal comm scholars couldn"t visualize the creation of meaningful, lasting relationships via cmc. Saw utility of comm systems for task-related purposes: ex: broadcasting/retrieving information; international business conferencing. We refer to these theories as cues filtered out perspective on cmc. The alternative viewpoint was that this was correct instead referring to it as cues-limited, but that we are actually very able to adapt to the lack of cues, and still form meaningful relationships via mediated spaces.
