The unification of the achaeans (or danaans or argives but not greeks or hellenes) to save (steal back?) Aphrodite, apollo, athena, hera, hermes, poseidon, themis, thetis, zeus. A tragic/ethical/moral flaw to disrupt good-guy vs bad-guy simplicity. With themis, zeus plans the trojan war. Zeus makes him decide out of hera, aphrodite, and athena, who is the most beautiful. He chooses aphrodite (bc she will give him the most beautiful wife - helen) Replays themes from homeric hymn to aphrodite. Aphrodite supports the trojans - paris was a trojan. Everyone wants to marry his daughter - helen - so odysseus suggests that everyone promise to defend the marriage even if they don"t get chosen. A group of warriors have sworn to defend the marriage (helen w menelaus) Helen is supposed to marry paris (from aphrodite) but she"s already married. Xenos, xenoi, xenia: guest, host, stranger, visitor (compare english word xenophobia") The hero of metis fails his 1st test.
