Document Summary
Small review of last lecture: energy has 2 ways of being transferred, heat, work, 3 types of energy, potential, kinetic c. 3: example of when a spring is pulled apart then released, energy is released as the spring comes together to its resting state. Ionic bond: positive and negative charge coming together. As they get closer there is a decrease of energy in the system. Always take energy to break a bond. Always release energy to make a bond. Opposite side of the system is the surrounding. If a key is the system interested in, dr. zhang is surroundings , as is the classroom, etc. No energy or matter can be exchanged with surroundings. Energy can be exchanged with surroundings, but not matter. Energy and matter can be exchanged with surroundings. 1st law of thermodynamics (more description and specification): Energy cannot be created or destroyed: total energy of system + total energy of surroundings is constant.
