Document Summary

One of the strongest influences affecting the human species. When intimate relationships end very painful. Ex: fiddler on the roof: back and forth between husband and wife, do you love me? song. Dimensions of intimacy: physical, we need touch, established from birth; coddled, held, rocked to sleep. Lack of physical intimacy can negatively affect us with lifelong consequences. Intimacy is important; but so is distance: we need privacy, don"t have time and energy to be truly intimate with everyone, takes time and effort. Intimacy is not necessary for all valuable relationships. Cultural differences: colonial american spouses shared formal conversations, unmarried lovers in the us may kiss and hug in public, but not allowed in. Sometimes we have no choice: can"t choose our parents/family, many marriages have been arranged. Not perfect; need some flaws: best way to be liked is to be good at what you do, but admit your mistakes.
