Q: what is political islam: an ideology and a social movement and a political agenda, not the same as islam, which is religious doctrine and practices. The emergence of political islam: ideologies lost their appeal because they became a lot less effective, arab nationalism and arab socialism didn"t really accomplish anything. Socioeconomic success and relative decline: education, urbanization and national identities, creates new social groups and categories, everyone can read and discuss the quran. Structural adjustment and economic austerity: the demand for charities increases, charities typically are run by islamists. Oil wealth and wealth of arab monarchies. Strategic allies of regimes: regimes use religious groups to fortify against communists. Critique of leaders and government at the time. Critique of entire society: society has departed from true message of islam, currently living in age of ignorance. Now political islam declares non-groupees as non-believers.
