Emotions are expressed through language and facial expression. Facial-feedback hypothesis: facial muscles send signals to the brain that help it recognize the emotion being experienced. Similarities in the ability to differentiate facial expressions of emotions. Development begins w the creation of a zygote. Prenatal period extends from conception to birth. Embryonic: occurs over the next 6 weeks (end of 2 month) At each prenatal stage, genetic and environmental factors influence our development. Transfers nutrients and oxygen from mother to fetus. Teratogens are harmful agents that can impede development. Maturation is the biological process that enables orderly changes in behavior that are relatively uninfluenced by experience. Maturation sets the basic course of development; experience adjusts it. However, there are individual differences in timing. Rapid motor development has been observed in some cultures. Strong emotional connection we share w those to whom we feel closest. Research in the 1950s suggested that attachment is not associated w nourishment.
