Why this matters: primitivisms today (people still use primitivisms to make themselves feel good to this day) Polygenism as reigning view - doesn"t have to be conversation; people are just different (another species) Boas and company: people are part of the natural world. Lawyers were attached because they were interested in rules, laws, hierarchies, etc. Coon: evolutionism worked in leaps and starts. Spencer: survival of the fittest ; social darwinism (smooth process of evolutionism, never really darwin"s game) Born to quaker family; could not attend university because he didn"t belong to the church of england.
