PRESSURE and BOYLE’S LAW
Pressure
SI units = Newton/meter2 = 1 Pascal (Pa)
1 standard atmosphere = 101,325 Pa
1 standard atmosphere = 1 atm = 760 mm Hg = 760 torr
How is pressure measured?
Barometer: Device used to measure atmospheric pressure.
Manometer: Device used for measuring the pressure of a gas in a container.
Pressure Conversions
EXAMPLE 1: The pressure of the air in a tire is measured to be 28 psi. Represent this pressure in atmospheres,
torr, and pascals.
EXAMPLE 2: The height of mercury in a mercury barometer is measured to be 732 mm Hg. Represent this
pressure in atm, torr, and pascals.
EXAMPLE 3: The pressure of a gas is measured to be 2.79 x 105 Pa. Represent this pressure in atm, torr, and
psi.
EXAMPLE 4: On a summer day in Breckenridge, Colorado, the atmospheric pressure is 525 mm Hg. What is
this air pressure in atmospheres?

Document Summary

Si units = newton/meter2 = 1 pascal (pa) 1 standard atmosphere = 1 atm = 760 mm hg = 760 torr. Manometer: device used for measuring the pressure of a gas in a container. Example 1: the pressure of the air in a tire is measured to be 28 psi. Represent this pressure in atmospheres, torr, and pascals. Example 2: the height of mercury in a mercury barometer is measured to be 732 mm hg. Represent this pressure in atm, torr, and pascals. Example 3: the pressure of a gas is measured to be 2. 79 x 105 pa. Represent this pressure in atm, torr, and psi. Example 4: on a summer day in breckenridge, colorado, the atmospheric pressure is 525 mm hg. Pressure and volume are inversely related (constant t, temperature, and n, # of moles of gas). Pv = k (k is a constant for a given sample of air at a specific temperature)
