CHE-1102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Combined Gas Law, Atmospheric Pressure, Torr
Document Summary
A lot of dead space between molecules. Gases form homogeneous mixtures regardless of identity. Uniformly mix together / proportion of molecules is virtually the same. Properties which define the state of a gas sample. Impact of molecules against the sides of the container. Pressure the atmosphere exerts is called atmospheric pressure or barometric pressure. Atmospheric pressure: the weight of air per unit of area. Weight of mercury in tube being pulled down and out of tube by gravity. Atmospheric pressure exerted on liquid mercury which results in pushing the mercury back up the tube. When the weight of the mercury left in the tube equals the pressure exerted by the atmosphere, the mercury stops flowing out. H = the distance from top of the mercury in tube down to the top of the pool of mercury. At sea level, h = 75cm / 760mm / 30in. Atmospheric pressure (of barometric pressure) is often given in units of mm hg.
