Complex traits that have a negative effect on humans. Locus: specific location on chromosome, usually a gene. Genetic mapping studies that identify locations on chromosomes that affect diseases: diseases are quantitative traits. Region of chromosome on which something is affecting measure of outcome of disease. The point of identifying these qtl alleles is to better understand biology and improve human health. We want to find out genes, find proteins, products, functions: used to search for treatments. Use them to measure predisposition in individuals. Some challenges to learning about complex traits by identifying qtls. 35 qtls that when they very, the phenotype effects level of serum cholesterol. Very often once we find it, it"s a new gene- don"t know what it does. All of these qtls only affect variance to a small effect. All of them together add up to total variance. The alleles (qtls) that contribute to complex traits tend to be common and have low-penetrance effects on the trait.
