Is the use of, and especially the alteraion, of organisms, cells, or biological molecules to produce: food, drugs, or other goods: applicaions: from yeast make bread, wine and selecive breeding of animals. Use of microbial and biochemical techniques to solve pracical problems: recombinant dna techniques, can isolate genes from one, transfer to another, geneic engineering, numerous uses: agriculture, medicine, law enforcement. Restricion enzymes: recognize and cut 4-6 base pair nucleoide sequences, typically, palindrome, generates restricion fracions, cohesive ends (sicky ends) that are commentary can anneal, allow creaion of recombinant dna molecules, dna ligase joins molecules covalently. Gel electrophoresis: separates dna based upon size ideniicaion, loads wells with dna samples, also dna ladder, run current, dna migrates toward + electrode, visualize, can separate rna proteins. Join dna (insert) with plasmid (vector) to generate independently replicaing recombinant molecule. Can place gene into high copy number vector. Host bacteria will make large amounts of protein. Each gene copy can be transcribed and translated.
