Document Summary

Strep throat, impetigo, rheumatic fever, scarlet fever, toxic shock syndrome (tss), necrotizing: s. pneumoniae. Encapsulated form is pathogenic (avoid being eaten up) Pneumococcal pneumonia high mortality rate esp. for older patients: an antigen capable of producing an inappropriately strong immune. Superantigens response (cid:498)cytokine storm(cid:499: stimulate abnormally high number of t cells (5-25%)- non-specific, can lead to systemic reactions and shock. S. pyogenes scarlet fever can cause streptococcal toxic shock. Strep throat syndrome (also associated with tampon use: severe soar throat, enlarged tonsils, tonsillar exudate white pustuals on tonsils due to bacteria killing wbc and forming pus, similar symptoms could be due to viral infection (mono) Streptococcus sequelae: incomplete antibiotic treatment or no treatment (of strep throat/other strep infection) can lead to sequalae further infection (cid:523)like (cid:498)sequel(cid:499)(cid:524, would result in scarlet fever (pre-antibiotics) Now b/c of antibiotics, kids rarely die: rheumatic fever. Resistance not a huge problem at this time: vaccine for s. pneumoniae.
