Dermis: cells are damaged and blood vessels torn: s/s. Hematoma: collection of blood beneath the skin. Crush injuries: sudden blow or blunt trauma, little external signs, but can cause shock and death. Abrasions: threat is from infection, superficial wound caused by rubbing, scraping or shearing, bleeding usually not severe. Laceration: break in the skin that may vary in depth, threat is damage to tendons, muscles, and nerves, linear = incision. Tend to bleed freely and can be deep: stellate/irregular laceration. Avulsion: tearing of a flap of skin, can remain hanging or be torn off altogether, flap, if still attached or unattached for a short period of time, sometimes it can be re-attached. Bites: combinations of penetration and crush injury, human or animal, 9 of 10 animal bites by dogs, human bites most difficult to manage because of high infection rate; mouth harbors millions of bacteria. Cleaning wounds and preventing infection: wash the area around the wound with soap and water.
