HDFS 225 Lecture Notes - Lecture 25: Ageism, Cardiovascular Disease, Healthy Diet
Document Summary
In the u. s. , aging is seen as undesirable. Ex. getting jobs, general public, in families. We see this more in the u. s. than in other countries or cultures. The population of people 60 and + is consistently growing. Occurs throughout years, despite efforts to slow it. Gerontologists categorize older adults into these age groups: Some systems decline rapidly; some hardly at all. Reserve capacity: backup capacity that helps body systems function in times of stress. With age, reserve levels drop, so the body doesn"t recover from physical stress as quickly. Chronic stress is linked to chronic levels of inflammation. 80% of older people have trouble seeing. How well a person functions physically and socially. Tend to take better care of themselves. Ex. eating better, less riskier decisions, smoke/drink less. Ex. driving at night and during the rain is harder. Irreversible damage to optic nerve caused by increased pressure.
