HDFS 225 Lecture Notes - Lecture 24: Midlife Crisis, Carl Jung, Erik Erikson
Document Summary
Healthy midlife includes individuation (begins in young adulthood/adolescence) Emergence or true self through balance of the whole personality. Combine conscious & unconscious aspects of the psyche into an integrated whole. Two difficult but necessary tasks of middle age. Acknowledging mortality - requires a search for meaning within self. Erik erikson: time of turning outward (opposite of carl jung who said it"s a time of turning inward) Concern for guiding the next generation (leaving a legacy) (more than just (giving time, energy) financially giving) People who do not find an outlet for generativity become self-absorbed, self- indulgent & stagnant. Associated with a greater sense of well-being and satisfaction. Some suffer turmoil, others feel at their peak. Least likely among those with ego resiliency. Have a sense of mastery and control. Midlife is just one of many transitions. But no more than other stages of life (all comes down to perception) Psychological transitions that involve significant change in person"s life.
