In us, the average marriage that ends in divorce does so after 7-8 years. Divorce leads to remarriage & formation of step family. Increase in divorce accompanied passage of more liberal divorce laws that eliminate the need to find one partner at fault. Higher a woman"s income, the least likely she remains in bad marriage, and women today are more likely than men to initiate divorce. Divorce is not a single event, it is a process--- a sequence of potentially stressful experiences that begin before physical separation and continue after that . Jungs and erikson"s legacy: vaillant and levinson: longitudinal studies of men, both described major midlife shifts, interiority- neugarten"s term for a concern with inner life (introversion or introspection) which usually appears in middle age. Adult personality development hinges less on age than on important life events. Middle age brings a restructuring of social roles.
