Document Summary

See supplementary posting on d2l (events in geologic time) What is it: the age and structures (and events) that formed the copper and iron deposits of michigan. Weathering (breaking up of rock in place: physical weathering weathering by physical processes (no chemical change); breakdown of rock into smaller particles. Water enters cracks: crack and weaknesses formed by various means such as jointing (more under structure) Water melts and sinks further into crack. Water freezes and expands, further widening crack, etc. , etc. This is aided by temperatures going above and below freezing. Salt can do same thing dry-wet cycle. As rock is unroofed by erosion or by uplift, reduced (lithostatic) pressure causes it to expands in the vertical direction and breaks into sheets (a particular variety of joints) Break-up by impact of grains on each other by wind or water. Weaker rocks weather more and result in indented or sloping layers.
