Document Summary

Iclicker: fossils are found in which rock types: sedimentary only. Regolith and bedrock: solid rock attached to the crust=bedrock, relatively rare to find exposed bedrock on earth"s surface, most of surface covered with regolith: loose blanket of mineral grains, rock fragments, organic matter. Weathering, erosion, and sediment: regolith is made from bedrock by weathering: chemical and physical breakdown of rocks. 2: erosion=processes where rocks and regolith are broken down and transported. Weathering: weathering processes occur at earth"s surface, rocks react with hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere, weathering creates sediment, physical=mechanical breaking/disintegrating [busting, cracking, grinding!, chemical-reacting with water [dissolving, making new minerals] Physical weathering: mechanical breakup; doesn"t change mineral make up, creates broken fragments of rock, bedrock: usually not really solid or homogeneous. Jointing/exfoliation a: wedging [frost, root, salt, animal activity. Physical weather: jointing: deep crustal rocks are hot and under high pressure, erosion removes material; deep rocks become exposed, at the surface, crustal rocks cool and expand, this causes fractures called joints.
