When people try to understand variety of perspectives it opens up lines of communication and whos that you aren"t locked into your own way of thinking. People are more willing to share when they sense others are really listening and not judging or comparing. Stepping outside yourself can make you more aware of thoughts and feelings. For effective communication, need to do self-evaluation and be open to feedback. Different communication styles/forms with pauses, volume, facial expression, and gestures. Avoid language that might be offensive or hot buttons to others. Relationship between speaker and receiver influences communication. One aspect of this relation is status and power. Differences in power and status can be obstacle to effective communication. Cultural biases, like dialects or accents that may trigger negative assumptions about a person"s education, intelligence, or character.
