Data vs. information: data facts which may or may not be processes (edited, summarized, refined) and have no direct effect on the user"s actions. Information causes the user to take action that would not or could not have been taken: action does not necessarily mean a physical act. 2 rules for data collection: relevance - only capture relevant data, efficiency only collect data once and be available to multiple. Database management users: database physical repository for financial and nonfinancial data, business data is organized in a logical hierarchy, 3 levels attribute, record, file. It involves many functions, but we"ll focus on the following: data processing, systems development and maintenance, database administration, network administration. Decentralized: centralized data processing all data processing is performed by one or more large computers housed in a common data center that serves all users, end users process transactions from terminals connected to central computer and database.
