U.S. Diversity
- U.S. Racial and Ethnic Diversity
o 150 racial and ethnic groups
▪ 1950 – 86% white
▪ 2025 – 58% white
▪ 2047 – whites will be less than half the total population and multi-racials will
triple
- Race
o Share physical characteristics that are socially important (by the society)
▪ Ex: skin color, facial feature, eye shape, hair texture
o It is not biological and is a social construction
▪ Ex: whites and blacks
- Ethnic Group
o Group that identifies with a common national origin or cultural heritage
▪ Ex: Language, geographic roots, customs, food, traditions
▪ Ex: Puerto Ricans/Chinese
- Racial-Ethnic Groups
o People who have distinctive physical and cultural characteristics
o Includes physical and cultural traits
▪ Ex: Black Cubans
- U.S. Immigration
o The proportion of foreign born U.S. residents is smaller than in the past
▪ From 15% in 1990 to 13% in 2012
o U.S. admits 1 million immigrants annually (more than any other nation)
o Undocumented immigrants has risen
▪ From 180,000 in 1980s to 11.3 million in 2014
o Unauthorized immigrants make up
▪ 27% of the foreign born
▪ 4% of the atio’s populatio
- Reactions to immigration
o Those who see it positively
▪ 45% of americans say that they strengthen our country bc of their hard work
and talents
▪ Unauthorized immigrants are more likely to work in low wage and dangerous
jobs
o Those who see it negatively
▪ 37% of americans believe that they weaken the country taking jobs, housing and
health care
