Document Summary

Skeletal muscle tissue- moves the bones of the skeleton; striated and voluntary. Cardiac muscle tissue- found only in the heart; striated and involuntary. Smooth muscle tissue- located in the walls of hollow internal structures; nonstriated/smooth and involuntary. Storing and moving substances within the body. Electrical excitability is the ability to respond to certain stimuli by producing electrical signals called action potentials. Contractility is the ability to contract forcefully when stimulated by an action potential. Extensibility is the ability to stretch without being damaged. Elasticity is the ability to return to its original length and shape after contraction. Surrounding each muscle fiber is a thin wrapping of mostly reticular fibers called the endomysium; helps to bind muscle fibers together, yet is loose enough to allow them to move freely over one another. Fascicle- bundles of muscle fibers wrapped in a thicker layer of connective tissue. Perimysium- dense irregular connective tissue that covers fascicles.
