Document Summary

Gene- the amino acid sequence of a polypeptide is programmed inheritance. Nucleic acid- polymers made of monomers called nucleotides: store/transfer genetic info. For protein synthesis: deoxyribonucleic acid (dna, ribonucleic acid (rna, nucleic acid: polymers of nucleotides. Nucleic acid structure (polymer of nucleotides fig 5. 26) Cytoplasm of eukaryote: pentose sugar (5 carbon) Deoxyribose (dna) (makes it less susceptible to hydrolysis: phosphate group, nitrogous base. Pyrimidines- single ring (cytosine-c, thymine-t in dna, uracil-u in rna) Backbone: consist of the phosphate group and sugar linkage. Bases in separate chain pairs (purine to pyrimidine) Phosphate of c5" is covalently bonded to the hydroxyl c3" of the other. The phosphate c5" and hydroxyl c3" have no bonds on the end nucleotides, antiparallel because 5" and 3" are bonded to 3" and 5" at each. Dna consist of 2 nucleic acids, rna consist of single strand of nucleic acid.
