Document Summary

After an immune response, some b- and/or t-cells can become memory cells, living for years. They cause secondary immune responses, fast and brutal, when they recognize an antigen. Vaccines rely on formation of memory cells: inoculation, dead or inactive pathogen, live attenuated pathogen (less active, purified bites of pathogen"s antigen, immune response to antigens, memory cells created. Flu virus evolves rapidly: changes epitopes. Old memory cells may not recognize this year"s epitopes in prevalent viruses. People too fragile to handle vaccines (autoimmune disordered, preemie. Rare, some people do not have a proper immune response (no memory cells) People who choose not to get vaccines. If most people in a population are immune, the unprotected are protected anyway. Cannot catch it from those who do not have it. Herd immunity breaks down as more people do not get vaccinated. Saliva breaks down food and moistens it for softening and lubricating.
