SOC 32 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Adrenocorticotropic Hormone, Norepinephrine, Executive Functions
Document Summary
Lecture stress, emotions and affective disorders | 26 -03-2019. Lethargy -> balance -> peak -> strain -> psychopathology. The performance depends on the level of stress. Balance would be expected to be at the top, because peak performance is challenging to maintain. We have a stress response to bring the body back to homeostasis. => physiological (internal), behavioral (external), normal (coping), pathological. Stress is disruption of homeostasis, but it all depends on perception. Perception of a discrepancy, whether real or not, between the demands of a situation and the resources of the person"s environment. How we perceive and event is more predictive of our response to the stressor, than the event itself. Loss of control on its environment (uncertainty, not able to predict or influence its relevant environment. In most cases one has, or has access to, the resources necessary to meet the challenge. Stress is an extra stimulus to help us perform at our best.
